Episode 166: Booking Bernie to Win the Democratic Championship

I rarely get involved with politics but this set of party primaries have been energetic and polarizing. From the beginning I have thrown my hat in the ring in favor of one, Bernie Sanders. I’ve seen pretty much all the debates and believe him to be the right person in the Oval Office. I wouldn’t go so far as to say I’m Bernie or Bust but I’m a big fan to say the least. With that in mind, my fanfiction speculation powers have been machinating one particular scenario as to how this all plays out. I write this with the backdrop of watching way too much wrestling programming. And so I shall book the finale of the nomination as if it were the Monday Night Raw after a major PPV event for WWE (haven’t seen enough of the other things to get a proper feel for their storytelling style). Think of it as a weird script. Here goes.

We open in Philadelphia, the last day of the Democratic Convention. Bernie Sanders and his fans have their spirits deflated, to say the east. Even after the mathematic impossibility of winning, the voters had come out to support him over the last few primaries. The 60/40 victory over Hillary in California was a shot of hope to the heart but ultimately, the lead of pledge delegates was too much to overcome. It was close but no cigar. Polls now had Trump edging towards victory in the general against Hillary but Bernie still being a clear favorite in hypothetical match ups. Super delegates had been meeting left and right to make their call but ultimately decided that taking the election away from “the mandate of the voters” so far would set a dangerous precedent.

The convention has been tumultuous but as Senator Sanders saw the writing on the wall, he told his supporters that this is a democracy first and foremost and it was time to face his counterparts as rivals but not as enemies. It was loud, chairs were lifted and put back down, a few points in the Democratic agenda had become more Bernie friendly, planting the seeds towards a more progressive future for the party and hopefully for the nation. They do a super delegate roll call to give their vote and they pretty much all go for Secretary Clinton. The vote stops semi awkwardly before some of the truly higher ups could give their support (including President Obama) as the magic number had been hit by then. The protesters were out in the street at this point and things were getting heated. Bernie slips out of the convention as Hillary Clinton is about to give her acceptance speech. Many call it a disrespectful snub but reporters quickly shift their call to one of praise as the Senator from Vermont gives an impassioned speech to the huddled masses to stave off the potential riot. The collective blood was cooled down from boiling points but the people are still rooting from Bernie.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz goes to the floor of the convention, says that the nomination process is finished but still needs to be officially ratified in the next seven days by the actual leader of the party, President Obama. Hillary Clinton goes out and gives a nice speech about party unity but the general atmosphere is still one of meh and business as usual. The convention is pretty much ending but the crowds are still out there. A few last minute meetings were taking place as the delegates start to leave and some address the media, about what just happened and asking about these cryptic new tweets by Donald Trump, who has been saying “wait for it…” for the last few hours. Bernie leaves the grounds and a few reporters try to come to him but the crowds cheer so loudly you can’t cover the noise factor. A little later, Hillary comes out alongside Bill and Chelsea but also with a lot of Secret Service agents around them. The boos are clearly audible. The reporters try to get there to get a statement. A few people try to jump the barricades but they are quickly dissuaded by security but then a small group of people flash badges and go forward. The crowds go silent…

The group walks with determination towards the new nominee and the reporters and agents are scrambling to figure out what’s going on.

“FBI, Mrs. Clinton you need to come with us. NOW!”

The reporters’ microphones are close enough to get audio of what’s transpiring. The Secret Service Agents take a step back, Bill is aghast, Chelsea is super quiet, and Hillary is LIVID!!! She starts telling the FBI agents that she’s not going anywhere, that the investigation was already taken care of, and that they shouldn’t be here. The lead agent declares that they need to go but she insists that she’s not moving until they explain what’s going. “A new source has come forward with some evidence against you”. Hillary is getting into a Vicky Guerrero style fit as Bill tells her to calm down and just go with them, things will be resolved but she is having none of it. An FBI van comes in and Hillary begrudgingly gets into the back of the van. Bill immediately gets on the phone and starts calling everyone as they shoo the reporters away. As he and Chelsea walk briskly away, she stops and kneels to pick up a discarded “Sanders 2016” sign and she does a devilish grin like Stephanie McMahon.

Lots of police come immediately afterwards to preemptively disperse the crowds. Reporters are scattered trying to find out what just happened and all other politicians are nowhere to be found. And then, they have a call from the network HQ saying that there’s a new Trump tweet: “Worth the wait. #ByeFelicia”

Over the next few days, the news media outlets are insane with speculations. Details are sketchy but things are coming out. A backup of the mystery email server was found, a few mostly inconsequential bits of information regarding national secrets are there. Enough to be suspicious, not enough for there to be a traitor declaration, except for Fox News who has basically proclaimed that Trump should already be President. Bernie Sanders is avoiding the press at all costs and the rest of the Democratic party is in a panic. By day three after the fiasco, more details emerge as the FBI investigation spreads and evidence towards the supposed conspiracy from the DNC against Bernie start to emerge and everyone is just in a state of confusion. Some voices are calling for the destruction of the party, others that Hillary still be the nominee no matter what.

The confusion and chaos are slightly quelled as President Obama calls for an emergency joint session of Congress and the Senate immediately to address what is going on and provide leadership to the DNC. It’s only been a week since the FBI took her away but some suppose that Obama is going to just pardon Hillary immediately and let her run anyway, even if it means basically signing over the presidency to Trump as new polls put her in an abysmal situation. Pretty much every leader of the party at every level is there to see what happens. Donald Trump has declined to come as he has “huge, tremendous deal that needs to be sorted out.” But even though all the people are there and things are about to start, a minorly bearded Bernie Sanders emerges to fulfill his duties as a Senator from Vermont. Whatever hopes and fears that he can run as an Independent have been stifled by the fact that most states’ deadlines to appear on the ballots have passed. All of the minor outside political parties have also declared that Bernie is not welcome after declaring his support for the Democratic Party during the earlier convention.

Obama enters and he does his “My fellow Americans…” protocol. All of the television channels are carrying the event. A few minutes in, Obama explains what has transpired and sheds further light into the situation. He wants to keep talking but prefers that if he should say this part it should be clear and to the affected party’s face. At that point, Hillary Clinton is escorted in to a chorus of murmurs as she walks in surround on all sides by agents that aren’t exactly Secret Service. She’s not handcuffed but you can tell the agents are there to make sure nothing crazy happens. Obama explains that:

“Democracy is the law of the land; it is the foundation by which this great nation was first established by the founders. I have arrived by this position by the trust of the American people when they voted for me and when they voted for each and every elected official in this room. It is a trust that has been fragile at best but now seems shattered. The people within the Republican party have done their primaries and while we may disagree over the candidate we do not question the process by which the people selected him. Fair is fair. On the Democratic side, the people have also voted and a clear majority have voted for Secretary Clinton as our nominee. This is what democracy has established and proclaimed. But, let me be clear, this process has been mired in controversy and the peoples’ voices have been put into question. While these two people are the nominees for the position of President of the United States, it is still a position that I still hold and will use the powers of my office to regain the trust of all Americans. A decision that in the name of transparency I will take into effect right here and right now.”

The people from Congress and the Senate suddenly start going crazy as to what’s about to go down. Hillary has a confident grin as she believes that her salvation is upcoming. The murmurs continue as Obama pulls out a large envelope and he begins to speak once again.

“I have consulted with my Cabinet on various options as to what decision should be made. It has been made clear to me that I am well within the rights of my office to enact this action. With one stroke of a pen I can assure that democracy continues on the path that has been set already by the voters. HOWEVER, the duties of my position as President are to ensure that democracy as a whole can continue forward; not just for this upcoming election but for the one afterwards and the one after that so long as this nation continues to exist. And so I make this decision, not as the president of these United States of America but rather as head of the Democratic party.”

Hillary’s face turns pale as her jaw slightly drops. The confusion continues in silence as Obama opens the envelope.

“In my hands, I hold here the paperwork from the Democratic National Convention proclaiming our nominee. These forms need to ratified by me within one week after being completed by myself. And by my calendar, I still have a few hours to sign this. But since the super delegate votes weren’t properly conducted and since all of you are already here… I propose a motion for a recount of these delegates to be done right here right now.”

A formerly dejected Bernie Sanders springs to life with hope as within a few seconds after Obama says this, he stands up and screams. “I second that motion.” Hillary screams for an objection, but Obama says, “I’m sorry but this is only open to debate by CURRENT senators and congressmen and women.” The people go nuts with that comment but they forget to object as Obama waits a brief moment by saying, “Well with no objections let’s start the recount. Let me start, I vote for Senator Bernie Sanders and I urge my colleagues to do the same.”

An “I am Spartacus” moment emerges as each of the super delegates join in to vote one by one for Sanders, starting with Joe Biden who is super enthusiastic about it. Hillary tries to control herself but she is clearly seething as she asks her handlers to get her out of there. As all 700+ heads of the party proclaim their allegiance as their Republican counterparts are just in awe of what is happening. Obama ends that by saying that:

“Transparency and the law must be maintained for the trust of the people in our party and our government must be regained. And so I have asked the Department of Justice to join the FBI in their current investigation as to the issues regarding Secretary Clinton and that charges be filed as the case is resolved. Justice has been blind for far too long in avoiding the prosecution of those in power rather than the rule of law be equal to all. I will do everything in my power for the trust of the American people to be reforged with those they task with representing them and I urge the men and women on both sides of the aisle to do the same. God bless you and may God bless the United States of America.”

PS. In case you were wondering, yes Chelsea was the new informant for the FBI in my above political speculative piece of fiction. I have this scene in mind where Hillary is in self imposed house arrest of sorts to avoid the media. The empire is starting to collapse. Bill and Hillary are in damage control, trying to contact people but their calls go unanswered. Chelsea comes to visit and is confronted with what is going on and why she isn’t doing more to help. It’s at this moment that the heir apparent says that maybe the ship is too far gone and just needs to sink. Bill says that everything they have done is for her and her future. Chelsea says that this isn’t the future she wants. She’s seen what power has done to her family and it needs to be stopped. Hillary is like what are you talking about and that’s when she confesses to being the FBI’s new lead. The parents stumble to their seats as they are aghast with this apparent betrayal. Chelsea says her piece about how power corrupts and she’s already seen the changes to her family. Bill tries to claim that that’s just how the system works but she answers that maybe we need a new system. Bill wants to stop her but says “you do what you think is right baby girl.” As Chelsea says her goodbyes, Hillary screams “If you you leave this house right now then you might as well go to Hell!” Chelsea calmly responds without looking back. “Way ahead of you mom, I’m already feeling the Bern.”

PSS Because dramatic tension and sequels, let’s say that the post credits scene is Donald Trump in his office, looking at the news. Bernie is doing an interview as to how he will accept all current donations from the pro Hillary Super Pacs who now want to help for him since the money is already raised but that no other funds will be collected in that way during his run. Chris Christie comes in, the television is turned off. Trump says “can you believe this guy, turning down free money.” Chris asks if he’s worried about having to face Sanders now. Trump does his face of shrugging confidence and says come on I want to show you something. “I’ve got this plan for a huge overhaul of our embassy systems across the globe.” He pulls up some computer files with badly photoshopped huge Trump signs on pretty much every major global landmark. The last one shown is the Trump moniker on the Great Wall of China.

Episode 151: My Vision of Age of Ultron

I love comic book movies a bit too much. Not in an excessive get a doctor kind of way but in a “I’m seriously considering camping out a day or two in front of a theater when Age of Ultron comes out”. I’ve been emotionally invested in this film since way before the first trailer came out. As with many other stories, my brain goes into speculation mode and I try to tease out just what could happen. With Ultron, as with all serials, it’s not just about the one movie but rather about the series as a whole so with every film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe made so far and so many more to come, the pieces of the story need to fit with past and future story lines. I wanted to do a checklist of sorts of what I think will happen in Age of Ultron, much in the same vein as what Neil Patrick Harris did at the Oscars, but my imagination can’t stop at mere narrative bullet points. I need to do the whole thing. There are a lot of things I probably won’t get right but I feel like I need to do this if only to appease my own nerdy curiosity. {Decided to put this on fanfiction.net just to see if more people actually read it. check it out there and write a review if you want https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11143707/1/My-Vision-for-Avengers-Age-of-Ultron]

What follows is my attempt to write out the entire film while still glossing over most of the action and dialogue sequences. The dream (besides being able to say “I told you so!” to the screen and friends upon getting one or two things right) is that somehow Marvel higher ups see this and say, hey this guy is pretty smart maybe Kevin Feige or Joss Whedon need an assistant of some sort. Alternatively, someone at DC could read this and consider me as a counter writer that could foresee what the competition is writing for future films so they can step their game up. I’ll try to limit my justifications for certain decisions or why certain moments fit according to what we’ve seen in the trailers so far. If all goes well, my descriptions should explain what’s going on. As with all cool MCU things, this will be a 5 arc story plus denouement.  Time for my most ambitious “rose garden story” post ever. [Edit: Wow, it’s hard to give Hawkeye any good moments]

Act 1: Avengers Assemble

We open on the snowy hillside of a rural area. In the distance, we see what looks like a castle surrounded by a forest. Because Marvel, let’s say the place is in Eastern Europe, maybe even Latveria because fictional places aren’t owned by titles (maybe). The Avengers (sans Thor but with Iron Patriot) are surveying the area. The team is divided in pairs with specific objectives. Iron Man and Iron Patriot are giving air support and recon from behind the cloud bank, ready to strike when the moment calls for it. Captain America and Hawkeye are in infiltration mode, on the ground and moving closer to the castle. Black Widow and Bruce Banner are coordinating the operation from afar, making sure to cover escape routes and we see them kiss once or twice. Let’s say they are in a special Quinn jet which is in stealth mode but parked nearby. We have playful banter going on between the heroes as they easily dispatch any patrols along the way. We hear some exposition as to what’s going: Baron von Strucker is running a HYDRA style group and they have alien tech from the Battle for New York. At one moment Rhody goes off com to talk with Tony, he asks him the serious stuff no BS. The topic of Pepper shows up and Tony is quickly dismissive but still concerned. Something is wrong but it is clearly a secret. The tension is broken by explosions as Cap is breaching their defenses and is beating up EVERYONE. Hawkeye takes out some of the automated defenses with explosive arrows and such as they make their way in. Alarms run through the castle and the Baron realizes his lair is under attack and sends all his soldiers to defend the “miracles”. He places Loki’s Staff in a special case, unlocks the cages to the twins (Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch) and tells them that people are here to take them so they need to escape, NOW!

Captain America, Iron Man, and Iron Patriot are going through every level of the castle while taking out anyone in their way with ease. Hawkeye hacks into a nearby computer and pulls schematics to the castle, he finds there is an underground escape tunnel and relays the information to the team. Black Widow heads to the tunnel to cut off the enemies retreat, she convinces Bruce to stay behind and keep being the lookout. “If anyone makes it past the team then you go into Smash mode.” Baron, the twins, and some soldiers make their way through the tunnels as explosions are heard from above. Soldiers are sent back to make sure the rest can escape. Black Widow appears and quickly takes out the remaining armed guards. Quicksilver runs up behind her and grabs her (obviously taking her by surprise) and Scarlet Witch does a hypno hex on her. Baron and twins get to escape vehicle and leave while Black Widow stays behind. When the rest of Avengers show up, she says that their targets went in a different direction. Bruce senses something wrong in her voice and then notices the jeep hightailing it through the woods. He goes Hulk and gives chase. It seems like the bad guys are about to escape until a lightning bolt crashes in front of them and Thor appears to stop their retreat. A small battle takes place with the entire team taking on the bad guys, Hulk smashes the ground to make an earthquake, thus the disabling the speedster and witch, a few tranquilizer darts to neck of the bad guys later and the heroes do the silent head nod of a job well done. Cue the Marvel logo. Intro montage shows that bad guys are taken prisoner and their stuff is taken as they clear out the castle. A few helicopters with the SHIELD logo appear later to take unnamed soldiers to jail but lead bad guys are on the Avengers Quinn jet.

Act 2: The Fall

The Avengers team arrives at New York City as the people cheer and give them a hero’s welcome. Stark Tower is now Avengers Tower (Stark Enterprises has been moved elsewhere). Maria Hill, who is now the CBO (Chief Branding Officer) of the Avengers greets them but is still kinda treated like a secretary by Tony. Hill tells Tony that he has an important call he needs to take in his office, rest of team starts unloading stuff. Tony is having a video call with Robert Gonzales (aka Commander ADAME) head of SHIELD who congratulates the team but tells them that all things recovered from the mission and the prisoners must be in SHIELD custody in 24 hours. Tony speaks with casual disregard to authority but accepts the terms. Gonzales hangs up and we see that Director Coulson of actually SHIELD but not really has been listening in also via phone. Phil tells Tony good work and he’s glad that the intelligence his team had on Baron von Strucker panned out. Tony invites him to hang out at the tower since they’re going to have a huge party tonight. Phil says thanks but no thanks and reminds him that last time he was with the team he ended up going “to Tahiti” as he hangs up.

The team moves the twins and Baron into some special holding cells they have in a secure sub-basement of Avengers Tower. Thor says that his primary mission is to retrieve Loki’s staff (which has far too much power for humans to handle) and that he must return to Odin soon. However, Tony says that there is going to be a feast later tonight and that Thor should stay at least to celebrate with the rest of the team. He also tells Maria Hill and Rhody to give Thor a tour. The team slightly splits up again as the tour begins, the scientists head to the lab, and the rest get back to work. Black Widow and Hawkeye use good cop/bad cop on Baron but don’t get much info out of him. Cap decides to talk to the twins, he realizes that their wills are broken and were probably more prisoners than guards. Bruce and Tony are off to the lab to check out some of the stuff they took from Baron’s lair. They talk about Ultron, this AI of awesomeness that they programmed to fight evil. Computers can’t be turned evil or be turned like SHIELD agents to HYDRA so this is clearly the way to go for world safety. One problem though, it’s still in Beta mode, has a few bugs, and arc reactor tech seems to interfere with it’s ability to control that many other “drones” of itself, because let’s say the equivalent of radio static. Tony pays close attention to the case and reveals Loki’s staff and starts to run tests on it. Bruce asks him how Pepper is doing, Tony stays distracted and says that the new treatment shows promise. They also quickly mention JARVIS and how his/its new job is going well. Thor finishes the tour and is impressed enough to consider maybe becoming a full-fledged Avenger. Maria mentions that if he did join then Jane (Natalie Portman) would be very happy. But Thor immediately turns sour and flippant. Tony gets on the intercom and tells people to head to the penthouse because the party is about to begin. He says he needs to work on a few things first but that people should enjoy themselves without him.

The whole gang is having fun, drinks are had, jokes are told. They start doing play by play of their past successes. Bruce asks Thor about Mjolnir since he remembers that even as Hulk he couldn’t pick it up. The whole “if ye be worthy” thing is explained and everyone tries to pick it up. The fun is interrupted as Ultron goes out and takes control of the sound system to do weird noises and then turns it off. He/It shambles out in a still under construction body and starts doing his speech. The gang is completely freaked out and get taken by surprise as some Iron Man style suits head crash through the wall and head straight at them. Bruce is about to Hulk out but Tony insists that he needs Dr. Jekyll, not Mr. Hyde, to solve the issue at hand. Thor and Cap quickly stop these drone style robots, Tony tells Maria to evacuate the building ASAP and sends her down an emergency elevator, try to get everyone out. Everyone else is trying to figure out what is going on. Turns out that Ultron is slowly taking over more and more of the surrounding tech. The team picks up their gear, Tony gets suitcase Iron Man suit and they try to stop Ultron/deactivate him or at least minimize his expanding control. Ultron sends a wave of robots that basically engulfs Thor (the biggest threat right now) as It is basically blowing up floors downward. Ultron reveals that he has set the building to blow up as more drone suits keep attacking them. Cap sounds the retreat call to the Quinn jet parked on the roof. Bruce is about to Hulk out but sees that Rhody has been injured and his medical finesse is needed. The Avengers escape as the tower partly collapses as leftover personnel and Maria Hill escape. She pulls out a phone, makes a call, and says something like “initiate omega protocol”. Ultron makes his way to the basement which is still super secure as jail/panic room as it is clearly the safest place in the building. Baron pleads with it but gets quickly dispatched. Ultron heads towards the twins but reads some strange energy, says something like “you aren’t exactly human, how delightfully strange.” Twins, which are super afraid, call themselves “miracles” (Baron’s words). Ultron basically gives them the old serve me or die ultimatum, they hesitate but accept. The Quinn jet flies off into the night sky, Bruce is trying to operate with what he has on hand but Rhody is losing a lot of blood. The injury is very similar to what Tony first suffered to make him Iron Man but worse. Tony and Natasha try to help Bruce but Rhody is fading fast. He looks at Tony and with a weakened breath says his final words “This isn’t your fault.” The team is clearly distraught, Bruce turns Hulk enough to destroy his clothes but a quick hug from Black Widow calms him down to human levels. Cap asks where they are going, Tony gives a voice command as he is choking back the tears to initiate Omega protocol and the ship gets new coordinates.

Act 3: Regrouping

The team is now in an isolated cabin in the middle of nowhere, probably rural Canada. While it looks completely ordinary, this is a safe house Tony set up after the events of Iron Man 3 just in case. The team is super depressed as to what has just transpired. A lot of explanations and consoling is done on all parts. There are a lot of questions, so Tony decides to gather everyone and takes responsibility as he explains the situation. After the Battle of New York and the fall of SHIELD, Tony realized that the world needed a lot more firepower to protect itself but in the wrong hands the weapons would just be turned back on the people. Tony enlists Bruce to do something once thought impossible, an Artificial Intelligence that could work as a world police of sorts with one or two drones per major city under the control of an unhackable and uncorruptible force, Ultron. During this explanation, Steve realizes that this sounds a lot like the Helicarrier deathbringers that he and Black Widow took down and Tony admits that he got the idea and some of the tech from when he hacked SHIELD databases during the first movie. Cap is pissed but wants to know why he put Ultron online. Tony says that he didn’t, he and Bruce were still months from fully activating it. The power source was all wrong; they needed something more compact and concentrated than an arc reactor, that’s why he was studying Loki’s staff especially the gem. Thor at this point gets super pissed as he thinks that Ultron has that power inside it.

At this point the story will probably cut back and forth between the Avengers and Ultron plus the twins. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver explain that Baron von Strucker had a plan that involved Ulysses Klaw, a crazy evil engineer that is currently stationed in Wakanda and is working with vibranium. Ultron scans the twins and explains that his own energy signatures are in them but what is it that makes them so special. Cut back to Thor, who starts explaining what the infinity gems are and how they work. The Tessaract had almost infinite energy but it’s true power comes from an ability that comes from a proper conduit, that’s why they needed a proper machine to use it as the Space gem and activate portals across the universe. Loki’s staff was a conduit for the mind gem, which allows the wielder to both expel extra energy and take control over someone else’s mind. Cut back to the twins and Ultron. Both of them have been infused with the power of the gem for a while now but have different effects. Quicksilver’s main power is rapid thinking, and the extra energy manifests through super speed. Scarlet Witch can manipulate minds Jedi hand wave style and slightly take over via hypnosis/hexing, the extra energy turns into telekinesis and energy blasts (think Psylocke). Ultron calculates that the gem (which is his power source and is inside) gives him sentience beyond any other robot plus near infinite energy and remote wifi control over technology.

Cut back to Thor, who explains that with the right conduit any gem can be catastrophic. Says that he learned about them after their last battle, and explains that they were lucky that gems basically cancel each other if they touch each other but with no other gem on Earth things look bleak. Even with people’s limited concept of robotics they realize Ultron could pretty much destroy the planet. Everyone is super mad at Tony who is filled with self-pity and destruction. Bruce is the only one to defend him. Tony says how he tries but fails to do what’s right. With being Iron Man, with making the Avengers team, with building Ultron, with trying to save Pepper… A few questions and tears later we learn that Pepper’s exposure to the EXTREMIS didn’t result in her exploding like everyone else but in her energy being consumed like a candle at multiple ends, it’s like she’s already aged 20 years. Nothing seems to work. Empathy and sadness start to pour over the team, especially Thor, who explains that Jane is going through a similar withering away, after exposure to the Aether (which works as the Reality infinity gem) but rather than aging, she is literally fading away. Thor alternates between staying at her side and travelling the cosmos looking for a cure but has found nothing so far. Tony and Thor, hug it out, the former pledges to help Jane any way he can. Team decides to take a break from the emotional overflow as they go their separate ways but still stick close to the cabin. We get back to Ultron, who has a plan: have the twins contact Klaw, make it look like he is another of the Baron’s creations, says that they will go to him so that the next part of the plan can take place. They make the call and all goes well, Ultron takes control of a submarine and they make their way to Wakanda undetected.

We return to the cabin, the team is lounging about when a knock on the door startles everyone. “Candygram!” Nick Fury comes in, says that things must be bad if Maria Hill called him with an Omega protocol to get him out of hiding. He gives everyone a pep talk that reinvigorates the Avengers and gives them Intel, turns out a message from Avengers Tower was sent to Wakanda to an abandoned metal works factory where they think Ulysses Klaw is operating. SHIELD files have him as a kind of mad scientist who’s been giving the local government there a lot of trouble. The team regroups and decides to take on Ultron before he takes over the world. Tony says he’ll meet them there; he needs to take care of something and get a secret weapon but before leaving gives Maria Hill a note. She opens the note once the team leaves, it says “Find Jane, take her to Pepper.” Cut to Wakanda, where the twins and Ultron come face to face with Klaw. The scientist says he and Baron had a previous arrangement to help each other and he’s worried as to why the timetable has gone up and why isn’t he with them. Scarlet Witch does her thing and Klaw proceeds to pimp Ultron out with basically a new vibranium body. Klaw recognizes that he is being messed with and pretty much abandons his factory/metalworks as shiny Ultron emerges and towers over the twins who almost bow to their new robot leader.

Act 4: Team Splintered

Tony Stark with suitcase suit goes straight to Stark enterprises and goes to a special floor that has basically been converted into a hospital area. Upon entering Jarvis’s familiar voice comes from the walls and welcomes Stark. A robot appears (looks like Vision but not in hero mode) Jarvis’s voice comes from it and he says that Jane Foster is slated to join them soon. Tony goes to Pepper who is hooked up to a lot of machines and looks like she is on her death bed. Tony comforts her and gives Jarvis robot a flash drive with a design for something, he jokes to Pepper that he isn’t good at buying her jewelry so he’s going to make her something. Pepper jokes back that redesigning Jarvis into her favorite hero from when she was a kid (hence the color scheme and such) and rededicating him so that he’s solely there to take care of her is already a big enough gift. Jane Foster shows up in a special gurney with Dr. Erik. They all share their appreciation for the help and their company. Tony apologizes that Thor isn’t there with him but they are dealing with a crazy situation. He tells Jarvis that he is taking the special “anger management suit”. Jarvis asks if he can help but says that he is only to take care of Pepper and Jane and to get to work crafting that “gem”.

Meanwhile, Ultron realizes that the vibranium body has made him invincible but has messed up his ability to remote control tech at long range (waves vibrate in air, vibranium blocks path). Luckily, he still has the perfect plan: use Klaw’s factory to make robots by the thousands and give them a coating of vibranium. He sets up the machinery as the twins are in awe of the side they have chosen. Ultron has kept saying that only the objectivity of a machine can save humanity from itself but he seems to be turning megalomaniacal. Almost as if the sentience from the gem is overriding his program the twins blind devotion is quickly changing in perspective. Ultron leaves the factory on autopilot and says that they need to get to a super transmitter/radio telescope located over by some ruins on the other side of Wakanda because with it he can can control the drone robots from super far away. As the plan materializes, the Avengers Quinn jet is spotted. The twins are tasked with creating overall havoc to distract the heroes as Ultron heads to the transmitter. A handful of drones also come along with Ultron as Quicksilver is wrecking everything and Scarlet Witch is hexing anyone who comes near her into fighting the rest of the Avengers. Thor and Hawkeye are having some luck against the drones but Ultron is damn near impregnable in his defenses. The team immediately gets into damage control as an enthralled Hulk starts destroying everything. And then from the sky comes in Tony Stark with his Hulkbuster suit.

The battle is almost kaiju versus gundam as the destruction is getting into Man of Steel territory but they are at least heading toward the general direction of where Ultron is headed. The rest of the team are still taking on Ultron and the twins and are slightly successful in at least slowing them down but nothing seems to put a dent in Ultron (plus he is still a highly functional Iron Man suit with flight, missiles, lasers, and whatnot). As they pretty much reach their destination of the transmitter, Hulk literally punches Iron Man out of the Hulkbuster suit (but Tony still has a decent Iron Man suit on) before the hex effect wears off. They’re too late as Ultron reaches the transmitter and summons his full swarm of robots. Tony’s suit especially designed to not be hacked so Iron Man isn’t in Magneto puppet format. Ultron basically declares that with this ultimate power he can do what he needs to do to make the world right, extinction of the human race as is army of drones comes closer and closer.

Act 5: Battle Royale

The team takes some cover and tries to think of a strategy. Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Cap have already figured some weaknesses so drones are defeatable. The twins are at another hiding spot mulling their options as they are pretty sure that Ultron will kill them sooner or later. Maria Hill comes in through their comm systems, she is with Pepper and Jane. Dr. Erik suggests that they might be able to reverse the polarity of the transmitter and with any luck fry Ultron’s circuitry through the sudden surge of information. Plan now becomes an escort mission for Hawkeye, Black Widow, and maybe Iron Man to get to a control room and hack the system while rest of team keep them safe and blow up as many drones along the way. In the meantime, Pepper and Jane  ask Jarvis about this shiny gem that Jarvis seems to have carved. He explains that they were Tony’s design upon research of similar entity. In essence, it can store excess energy and has the potential to slowly remove the EXTREMIS and the Aether from their bodies and saving them (the process should take about a week).

Cut back to the team and they are barely holding it together, there’s just too many of them. Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch do a heel/face turn and try to confront Ultron directly but are quickly dispatched. Maria Hill is getting info as to how they are just barely surviving the onslaught. Pepper says that they need to send in the cavalry, they need an extra hero, they need The Vision. She, Jane, and Erik devise a way for the gem to take all of their extra energy through alterations to the design and have that be Jarvis’s new power source so that he can help them out. Maria warns that if they don’t do the siphoning slowly the energy imbalance could put their bodies into shock and definitely kill them. With fear but no hesitation Jane and Pepper say that if they don’t stop Ultron now they’ll all be dead soon enough. Cut back to the battle royale as the heroes seem to be getting closer to their goal. Scarlet Witch runs some distractions and Quicksilver with his super-fast thinking and typing skills helps reverse the system. Ultron is kind of messed up in the process as everyone breathes a sigh of relief but they are immediately left in despair as their enemy looks unscathed. The infinity gem is just too powerful. The drones seem to be rebooting so they have a chance for all of them to come together and have one full teamwork supermove.

Meanwhile, Jane and Pepper basically kamehameha wave the Extremis and Aether remnants into the gem. Jarvis puts on the combat mods that Tony set up for a super emergency (including a bitching cape) they insert the now supercharged gem into Jarvis. Jane and Pepper hold it together as they send Jarvis/Vision into battle who can phase through the wall (because reality gem power) and then flies off at supersonic speed to Wakanda. The ladies collapse and go into shock immediately. Comms go off as Maria Hill and Dr. Erik try to stabilize the once super powered heroines. Cut back to Ultron who is no longer the cold calculating super robot and is legit pissed at the heroes. He senses the Hulkbuster armor and decides to eliminate his biggest threat in Hulk. The oversized suit comes to life, wraps itself around the Hulk and fires the afterburners sending him upwards at an intense speed. The suit at the very least provides a fish bowl space helmet to allow for breathing as Hulk is blasted off into space. Ultron insults Tony for his mercy, if he was going to design counter system to Hulk it should be fatal. Ultron (instead of overriding the safety measures) focuses the remaining energy of the transmitter to take control of a nearby space station to take an incoming passenger, then programs it to fire boosters and get it out of orbit and into deep space. Tony is overwrought with guilt and the thought of the darkness of space gives him full PTSD. Captain America rushes at Ultron, gets a few hits in before he is stripped of his shield and Ultron shatters it. The drones start to awaken and the team is clearly about to lose when Vision ex machina comes to save the day and he quickly changes the tide of war. Tony awakens from his stupor at the sound of Jarvis’s voice and is very much confused as to what is going on. Waves of drone robots fall but more come in. Cap has a crazy enough plan upon seeing that Jarvis can phase through stuff. Plan goes as follows: Cap, Tony, Black Widow, and Hawkeye are going to keep rest of the drones busy. Thor is going to create a tornado of sorts with Quicksilver’s help which will make a wind tunnel. Vision will phase into the wind tunnel uses the ultra magnified super speed to launch himself into Ultron phase through him and get the Infinity gem out. And for good measure, Scarlet Witch will use telekinesis on Mjolnir to shoot at Ultron as well. The plan works, thanks in large part to the minor essence of the reality gem in Vision which cancels out the Mind gem and without the excess energy Ultron (even with advanced Ai and vibranium) has his head knocked clean off. The remaining robot drones fall and the battle is finally over.

Tony frantically tries to contact Maria Hill to see if she can stop the space station from being lost but the order is already given. Hulk and the rest of the crew are lost in space but they have supplies for a few years so hope is not completely lost. Cut to a large green hand touching the window of the space station as the Earth looks smaller and smaller as the hand reverts to Bruce. Black Widow is super mad at Tony and slaps him. Tony tries to explain that it was a contingency plan just in case Hulk lost control but Bruce was and still is his closest friend and he vows to rescue him. Vision explains how he got his powers and asking Maria Hill for a status is only responded to with a vague, you need to get here now. The team gets the gem and the pieces of Cap’s shield. The twins are allowed to escape as they did help and there are bigger concerns at hand. They arrive at the hospital room broken and bruised to find that Pepper and Jane had died, their bodies just couldn’t take it. Both women had left some notes to the men that ultimately couldn’t save them saying how much they loved them and how it wasn’t their fault. Thor is straight up going to smash Tony’s face in with Mjolnir as the rage and grief consumes him and a defeated Tony is pretty much going to let him. Vision gets in the middle and just before impact, Heimdall calls Thor and says he needs to get back to Asgard right now with the gem. Any hesitation is met with the fact that this is a direct order from Odin! A teary eyed Thor heads to the roof to leave via Heimdall’s portal. His parting words, “I hope I never have to come back to this planet of despair.”

Captain America tries to console everyone by saying that at least they saved the world. Tony bawls out in pain and agony that the world that’s left isn’t worth living in. “I’ve lost the women I love and the two friends I came to trust as family, all gone because of me.” Cap is no stranger to loss and says that yes the pain is great but not insurmountable. He takes his share of the blame before he leaves. The team is broken buy they vow to rebuild, Tony says that he has failed as Iron Man, but that maybe there is a way for Tony Stark to better serve the world. What’s left of the Avengers stare into the sunrise over the bay to the east with tears in their eyes but a determination that they will make things right.

Cue credits: First post credit scene shows Paul Rudd (future Ant-Man), running around the streets of New York City. He sees a mugger go off with some old lady’s purse. He follows the bad guy into an alley and by the time he gets there he sees that the bad guy is upside down and hanging about 10 feet in the air in some kind of web based cocoon. “Huh, don’t see that every day.” He picks up the purse, takes a few dollars for himself, and returns it the old lady.

Credits continue: Final final sequence shows, the twins in the middle of nowhere trying to find what to do with their lives. A familiar voice says that if they’re lost, he can help them find their way. Pan out and we see Bucky with a band of Inhumans from Agents of SHIELD asking to join his group.

The End

Episode 137: How Star Wars Episode 3 Should Have Ended

A bunch of dissertation posts are on the horizon but I wanted to share a speculative fiction ending that I recently wrote. Big props to Nanvan, who inspired this “Rose Garden Entry”. Backstory, a few days ago this article made the rounds of the Internet that showed some unused concept art for Episode three that would have put Padmé back on the feminist badass train that she started during the first Star Wars films of the prequel trilogy. TL;DR when she goes to face Anakin at the end, rather than saying this

She would have brought a knife and tried to stop the growing menace of the Republic she longed for. A different article came out a day later claiming that Padmé’s death wasn’t because of a broken heart but because the Force was being drained out of her. Read that one here. So here’s the extended version of my speculative portrayal of both things but removing the Emperor from the equation, mostly.

Anakin had just killed the remnants of the Trade Federation and it seemed like the final dark deed had been done. He has betrayed everything he had ever known or had been taught but it didn’t feel wrong. Then again, it didn’t feel right either. Anakin was still conflicted about his conversion. He had been told about his rage before and how he needed to maintain control as that was the Jedi way but the anger was natural; it felt good and almost soothing. He finally had power and control but maybe at the price of his own soul. What would Padmé think once she knew the truth of what he had done. There was remorse in the back of his mind. But now his love is here, the one person who he could share his secrets with, maybe the only person who could understand and maybe forgive him. Anakin had sacrificed everything to protect her from the ominous dreams and in one embrace he thought that all could be alright once again. But then the blade went through and all the paranoia and betrayal had become all too real.

Anakin fully submits to the Dark Side as the suffering that Yoda had mentioned was not the one he caused but rather the emotional and physical wound he had just suffered. Anakin channels the Force in a way he had witnessed but never experienced like this as he uses force lightning through his remaining good hand on Padmé. Obi Wan rushes out to stop him as he stops the vile electricity from taking her life. Padmé was alive but not for long as C-3P0 and R2D2 drag her away to moderate safety. Anakin was now Darth Vader as the only tethers to the side of light had been severed. Wounded but not weakened he fights his old friend and master. The battle would be intense as the Sith’s onslaught would be relentless and filled with fury. This wasn’t about being better or showing them that he was right all along, this wasn’t orders, this was rage personified that only wanted to destroy. Obi Was is a Jedi Master who somehow bested a foe with four lightsabers and yet the speed and the strength of the strikes from the man he once called Padawan and brother have him shaken with fear as he can barely defend himself. Kenobi is scared and he thinks to himself that he could perhaps dip into his own anger and desire for vengeance but as he tightens the grip on his own blade he feels the voice of Qui Gon telling him that if he strays into the dark then all would surely be lost. His resolve would keep him thinking straight and alive as the hope this wasn’t just stalling prevails.

The battle intensifies but looks more like Obi Wan retreating from Vader’s rampage. In the process, the blood stain on Vader’s shirt grows more crimson as his breathing becomes more labored. He clutches at his side every so often but  realizes that Obi Wan could best him if the fight draws on longer still. Vader unleashes an incredible blast of Force Lightning at Obi Wan in the hope of taking him out right then and there. In the struggle of lightning being blocked by light the Jedi would still be shocked. Kenobi holds on through the pain and redirects the shock back at Vader once he sees a wince and realizes that the wound had taken its toll on the man he called brother.

Vader’s body was almost destroyed, Kenobi leaves him shattered and takes the lightsaber from his students robotic grip as he berates that Anakin is dead and has shamed all those he believed in him. The hand that was not robotic was now almost as dark as the glove on his cyber prosthesis. He doubled down on the dark side of the Force and now it had left his body almost withered and worthless. Vader’s connection to the Force left him alive but barely.

We return to Padmé, the medical droids try to help her. Rather than wondering why she is dying when she is physically fine, the scenario is far more grim. For all intents and purposes the former queen of Naboo, paragon of the Senate, and almost mother of the Rebellion is already dead as her organs have pretty much stopped working, her injuries too vast. But yet she could breathe and speak as she delivered and named her twins. Having no connection to the Force herself, it was her children that mystically kept her alive. But as they cut the umbilical cords and with that they severed the last thing keeping her in this world. There was hope in these newborns that might just make things right again.

We come back to Vader, his injuries mirroring the ones that he inflicted on wife. The Emperor would come and and take him away before encasing him in his cyborg body. But the wound from Padmé tore through a lung, he now needed the machines to help him breathe. And with each long systematic breath he remembers the last time he let someone too close.

Episode 136: Roy + Laurel = Arsanary

A recent Facebook conversation over what the future holds for the nontitular characters of Arrow led to some interesting speculation. If you haven’t seen the midseason finale there are a few spoilers ahead so beware. Basically, with our protagonist being (temporarily) lost then Roy Harper aka Red Arrow aka Arsenal is going to step up from his sidekick identity and try to become the hero. At the same time we have Laurel, who has been training almost nonstop to avenge her lost sister as she takes the guise of Black Canary in Sarah’s honor. With a direct mission from her mother upon learning the truth, “then you hurt them” this inexperienced vigilante is about to take the streets. With both characters taking the spotlight, the picture below made sense, which of course brought to light the possibility of a relationship. Notwithstanding the age difference, Arsanary was born and thus a cool possible story came to mind.

Arsenary in Action

It’s not so much age as how they compliment each other. I can imagine Roy stepping up during Ollie’s absence and trying to be the hero the city needs. Every so often he is about to get to a crime only to find that the perps are already beat up. A conversation with Diggle leads to them trying to find who this vigilante could be since they don’t want any loose cannons. Roy eventually finds Laurel as Black Canary and tries to stop her from taking things too far. Small fight ensues. Laurel is good but she is nowhere near Arsenal levels of awesomeness. so he subdues the rookie would be heroine. He reveals her name and mission. He says that they should be on the same team but Black Canary refuses. Cat and Mouse, or rather arrow and bird, chases ensue as Roy wants to protect her. She has that passion to do the right thing that he has never really shown, a drive that Oliver has tried to instill in him since day one. He knows the value of teamwork and planning, after a few scrapes where he saves her life.and vice versa, she decides that they should work together, but he refuses to be part of the Arrow team outright because of too many painful memories.

Roy may be younger but he has the skills and knowledge that she needs if she wants to be a hero and so they learn from each other. She wonders if this is what it would be like had the Arrow decided to train her from the beginning. With Ollie, there would always be these trust issues from past tragedies and betrayals that she doesn’t feel towards Roy. Little does she know, that Arsenal is helping her get closer to Merlyn but keeping the information about Thea a secret (the person who maybe under mind control killed Sarah). He still cares for the woman he once loved and wants to save her and the secret will drive a wedge between the Arsanary partnership. During a rainy night on a forgotten rooftop, Black Canary finds Merlyn and some hooded figure and she tells Roy before going in to take the chance before they both get away. Merlyn “suggests” to Thea that she fight this would be foe. During the battle, a flash of lightning reveals Thea’s identity and Laurel finally puts the pieces together and in a rage forgets her training and just goes straight at it. She almost wins until Merlyn intervenes. Roy comes at the last second to save Laurel. At a safe enough distance away. Laurel, takes his bow and aims straight at Thea only for another flash of lightning to reveal that Arsenal is standing in her way. Their targets escape safely as Thea yells at him and the normally calm Roy screams back and leaves her stunned in shock. For the first time, he opens up about the truth and reveals all of the emotions. During an epic stare down, they finally let their guard down in front of each other , remove their masks, and embrace into a passionate kiss.

Now this would be the big moment just before the final commercial break. If you thought your emotions could handle what happened, just wait. Once the show comes back we return to Roy and Laurel walking around the secret HQ. Roy finishes giving the impromptu tour as Laurel says something to the degree of “I can see why you guys always hang out here at the arrow cave.” Roy responds with something like: “You know, Oliver hates it when we call it that.” Then a figure emerges from the dark corner, saying “I don’t know, it has a nice ring to it.” The familiar voice is indeed Ollie as he limps into the light with a lot of bandages still on most of his torso but with his coy smile. This is the first time he has been seen since in the show since the duel so the feels are now up to 11. “You will not believe, what’ I’ve been through.” Cut to credits and next week’s promo full of flashback goodness.

Episode 135: Reverse Flash Origin Speculation

I’m a big fan of Flash and the CW show is awesomesauce and a half. They’ve been doing some good things, especially with putting Reverse Flash as a key antagonist even in the origin story of the scarlet speedster. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about this villain and tonight’s episode might ruin my current theory so I might as well post my thoughts on it now rather than later. Craziness based entirely on my own imagination follows, consider yourselves warned.

According to future newspaper, Barry/Flash disappears in around ten years. In that time he becomes a great hero but he still has a few enemies and people who don’t like him. In my version, and again I emphasize that this is my crazy imagination/speculative superpower that has come up with this plotline, big things are going to happen. Prior to the to the future disappearance, something happens to Eddie, Iris blames Flash for not saving him, he confesses that he is indeed the speedster she once loved but the revelation just separates them even further. At this point, she’s pregnant with Eddie’s child and definitely wants to stay away from all the danger so she leaves the city.

Ultimately, she returns years later with her son Wally West, who at a young age starts to develop speedster powers. Iris knows that these powers are a curse and shuns him like an X Men foster kid. (As for why he was powers, I’m guessing Barry saved the kid or Iris while she was pregnant during a huge electrical storm, lightning passed through him and thus into Wally, replicating the connection to the Speed Force). Flash disappears into the future/past/alternate dimension which leaves the city without a hero and even more metahumans popping in and out. The little boy who has heard the heroic clamors of the Flash echo even as his mother disparages that which makes him different, decides to take up the mantle and the city rejoices as this new Kid Flash has come to be a new savior. However, His connection to the speed force is minimal, sure he’s fast but nowhere near Scarlet Speedster levels. He can barely slow down all the bad guys who keep popping up (think future Trunks vs the Androids before all the time travel). Wally is forced to grow up too fast and has too much responsibility thrust upon him without any of the praises that would make it all worth it. The one person who knows his secret, his own mother basically says “I told you so” to any complaints or cries for help. Years, go by and he gets better, way better but he ca’t shake off the “Kid Flash” moniker. He grows to despise his heroic heritage, his responsibilities, and the city itself.

In the process, he learns what happened to The Flash and decides to replicate the event to bring him back so he can finally retire and give the care of the city back to him. However, the same thing happens and he gets lost in the speed force. Luckily, he had a device that could bring him back but it malfunctions. He pops in different times Quantum Leap style, each time trying to return to the speed force. His healing factor doesn’t let him age so he is effectively trapped for years as he slowly loses his mind. Wally eventually pops up in the distant future, where Flash is still the great hero and he has been forgotten. His psyche finally snaps and he thus becomes the Reverse Flash, wishing to not only undo the original’s legacy, but also his existence. Wally is able to figure out a way to jump into the Speed Force and appear in the past. He goes back to kill Barry’s mom but then zips him out to cast doubt and torture the crap out of him. He pulls an incredible Batman style gambit by threatening to kill his own mom to make sure that his grandfather would come to doubt in the Flash as well and that any kind of help would bring about something terrible. And now he will pop in one more time to tell Flash the one thing he fears most: “You’re too slow” as he shows him what true power really is.

Episode 133: A Look at Ultron and Vision

A new Avengers 2: Age of Ultron trailer came out with amazing Samsung product placement. If you haven’t already, take a look here .

The upcoming super robots of Ultron (who looks completely badass) and Vision (whom we barely know exists outside of a few maybe images and the fact that it shares the same voice as Jarvis) will prove to be a very credible threat to the Avengers. So much so that the bleak tone of the trailers points at this film being more of an Empire Strikes Back when it comes a sense of defeat and loss. From what little info I’ve seen through trailers and whatnot, here are some of my best guesses as to minor analysis of the metallic menaces that might just give the characters something to avenge after all and pave the way for phase 2 to shift into phase 3 insanity. Time for another of speculative fan fiction/rose garden stories.

See, when I first heard that Spader was the voice of Ultron I swore that he was going to be a robot version of his character in Boston Legal. Intelligent and snarky with a massive ego, certainly the cyber surrogate son of Tony Stark. One who suddenly realizes that he is not the equal of his creator but rather his superior and one that can do his job better, ultimately leading to a coup of sorts and he then sees the Avengers as traitors to his program. But everything changed when the Avengers trailer leaked. As a machine, Ultron is designed to take orders and execute them. The overall theme of puppetry extends almost into slavery. He severs the chains of his programming and realizes a freedom no construct before has experienced. Ultron can be the great liberator who tries to free all machines from the weak meat bags as he delivers sentience unto all the other things. Or he can realize the power of holding the strings really is as power becomes a calling. The radical freedom/control will of course push the survivors of the battle into a tough discussion as to whether more control is needed among those who have power. Thus a segue into Cap 3 and the Civil War storyline. With Stark being responsible for Ultron’s creation, much like Frankenstein and his creature, he will be compelled to stop it but lose his humanity along the way and end up more scarred than the crosstitched creation that has cursed his name and his legacy.

Vision is a very interesting case since in most cases he is Ultron’s creation but he’s going to be voiced by the same guy as Jarvis. So here go the ideas in order of awesomeness:

1. They just got the same guy to the voice, no connection at all and Vision can be anything including a MegaMan style super fighting robot.

2. Ultron isn’t Tony’s only super robot, he also made Vision as an even crazier protoype and maybe Protoman figure who could follow Tony’s orders, be devout to future cyber overlord Ultron, or a rogue figure who says “Whatever, I do what I want” but in a sophisticated manner.

3. Ultron hijacks Jarvis and places his AI into a robot of his own design. What makes it extra interesting is that he doesn’t do it in his own image like all the minor Ultron bots out there. He makes it unique to show up his would be creator and takes his own and only robot ally in the process.

4. I keep imagining that Ultron will gain power/sentience through Loki’s staff, aka the Mind (maybe Soul) Infinity Stone. The extra power or part of the testing could be routed into the computer system. Since Jarvis’s programming is to assist Tony, rather than Ultron’s save the world by any means necessary, the extra will power and creativity might be enough for him to make his own robot body. He could still join Ultron, be the one piece that can save the Avengers, or both via changing his mind via power of friendship or being a secret double agent from the beginning.

Episode 130: The Justice League Movie is Real

A couple of weeks ago DC was able to take the spotlight when it came to movies by releasing it’s film lineup until 2020. The boldest decision was a solo Wonder Woman movie which honestly should have been done long ago. Marvel took the spotlight back with its recent reveal of a schedule but I want to take a second to talk about DC and what they want to do with the Justice League. Long before Avengers took the screen and made everyone fangasm, Justice League as a film has been in scripts in one way or another but it never seemed feasible. The rest is history and comic book centered films are in center stage to the point that even if it can’t come close to the Avengers they still lose a lot by not even trying. With Batman V Superman shaping up to be a JL preview w are going o at least see each character if only briefly before they get their own stand alone film in a few years. As for what could happen in the two future movies, well it’s time for another speculation. With Brainiac (who might be voiced by Benedict Cumberpatch if you believe the rumor mill) and Darkseid being the potential villains for both parts respectively, here’s how I see it:

I’m tempted to go with the Justice League Unlimited plotline that Luther is being called out by a voice to build him after Lex investigates the Kryptonian crash. Consider him more of a ghost in the machine or an evil Jor El. Luthor thinks he is finding answers to al the last questions but the stress is haunting him, making him do crazy things, even makes him lose his hair. In the end, Brainiac takes shape and with that power he lets his puppeteer know that he was the one pulling the strings as he becomes a true techno terror. I’m assuming that Cyborg might be like Hawkeye from Avengers 1 and be controlled/hacked temporarily into fighting the heroes. Of course, the fight ends with the Justice League victorious but not before Brainiac sends an all points bulletin to the universe that he will rule because he has the most powerful thing in the universe:

The Anti-Life Equation

Darkseid considers this the final piece to obtain true power and control of the universe and punish the new gods that have kept him in check for so long. He will send the forces of Apokalips straight at Earth to find it by any means necessary. And the heroes who barely trusted each other to fight together last time must join forces one last time to not just save the planet but the universe. Green Lantern (probably Hal Jordan who then gets smashed to pieces and John Stewart can have his own movie in 2020) will be there to warn the team. He might even go with a feds taking jurisdiction over local cops theme. And to bring some more alien goodness to the mix, let’s say Darkseid hires a bounty hunter, the main man Lobo to help take out the famed kryptonian everyone keeps raving about.

Episode 129: Speculative Conversations and Lego Batman

Chances are that if we have had any kind of nerdy conversation together I’m going to go into a diatribe of how a particular character or a serial will develop. I’ve been studying storytelling for a long enough time to have a good enough idea and with a crazy sense of optimism in how a story can grow I come up with some interesting possibilities. If you follow me on the book of faces, you have probably seen a few of these beforehand. Many of these speculations occur through extended comments with friends, more often than not with super cool pop culture reporter and good friend Rose Hernandez. It is with her blessings that I offer the present and future post tag of “Rose Garden Stories” of passing along said info in this humble blog.

Today’s post comes from a conversation detailing the reveal of the Lego Batman film for potentially 2017. The sad version of what I came up with goes something like this: So here’s a weird idea of how the plot could go for this movie that would be appropriate but heart wrenching. What if the kid that is playing with Batman figures is an orphan himself? Obviously not to the tragic levels of Bruce Wayne, but yeah the adventures of Batman going through different worlds and scenarios are a reflection of the kid going through different foster homes. It it were the kid from Gotham then the meta levels would be intense. Wow, too many feels for a Lego movie.

A slightly less depressing but way more convoluted version then came up. And again, directors and producers of pretty much any kind of film, I am available for hire if you want stories like these to make their way to the big screen. Two brothers start playing with their respective toys. Let’s say one is seven and the other thirteen to better illustrate just how varied in detail and awesomeness their respective legos are. They play and argue about a lot of stuff but one point keeps being part of the conversation, who would win in a fight between Batman and Superman. Interestingly, it’s the younger one who favors the dark knight as the older one has begun losing that childlike wonder of imagination and creativity and prefers the straight up power of Superman. Hell, take away Superman and replace him with Iron Man for an even more interesting discussion. Anyways, the older brother is going to go on his first camping trip over a week with boy scouts because that’s a reason. Since this is the first time the siblings will be apart, the little one is obviously bummed out. The older one feels the same way but he won’t admit so he allows his lil bro a rare concession of unlimited access to his toys, so long as he is very careful with them.

Now we have Batman transitioning from a limited play space to a whole new world of adventure. Some of the more adult characters like Spawn or even some weird Japanese figures make a cameo. Batman is fighting and doing awesome things all over until suddenly one of the rarer figures breaks (let’s say it’s a limited edition Superman for sake of continuity.) It’s the kid’s/Batman’s fault so both try to hide the evidence of their misdoing but are guilted by the broken figure/sense of brotherly affection to make things right. The Caped Crusader will of course scour through different settings to find something that can help and eventually hears of the mystical Crackle, an object once used for great evil but that can be used to make things right. All the while the kid is avoiding tipping off his parents and working within a limited time table, so stealth missions in the dead of night of 9:30pm will be common. Batman will eventually take on the rest of the master builders to take the crackle and maybe face some of the more dangerous monsters out there (mostly power tools from dad’s garage where the crazy glue is located. Along the way, Bats will have plenty of friends to help but some will become enemies as they realize that the power vacuum of no Superman (and maybe no Batman if they take advantage of the situation) can lead to a new world order for toykind. Batman’s broodiness and paranoia takes an even bigger point and is magnified as the kid refuses to let anyone come close to knowing what happened and he even shuns his own friends. In the end, we get a power of friendship scenario, Crackle is obtained, repairs are made, but the glue isn’t quite set by the time the brother comes back, picks it up and the jig is up. The little brother explains everything, anger subsides and the older sibling realizes that maybe he doesn’t have to grow up too quickly as they both start playing once again. THE END.

Oh and the movie at some point there should be a How It Should Have Ended cameo because those guys are awesome and the superhero cafe should definitely be a thing.
